User-Contributed Transcription Isaac Ducoign July 23. 1854Dunbarton Aug - 1 1854                                                                   Ducoign, July 23d 1854My Dearest Antoinette                         This poor forlorn individual did not get any letter from his Ettie yesterday! To be sure he got two in the course of the week before, but then one would have been very acceptable for today, if Uncle Sam would only have brought it along. And the worst of it happens that usually whenever the Mail fails, it is next before a week when I have to be away, and can not get letters. So, I suppose this week letters from you will come by Tuesday's Mail perhaps; but I shall be away all the week, and not get them until Saturday. I am going tomorrow to Centralia and the North Country & probably be gone about all the week. This week I have not been forth? at all. Monday 17th I staid here in Office. Tuesday I went down to Big Muddy, and (by Train on 1st Div. where track has nearly reached Muddy) to Jonesboro. Wednesday I went with Mr. Watson etc. down over the First Div. to Cairo, or as near as we could get to there. There are two or three miles of Track yet to lay there at Cairo. We have laid no more Track here yet, and cannot you understand until it is completed to Cairo. If we could only have had Iron here you perceive we could have had our Track nearly laid now. But there has been no high water to get Iron up Muddy, and we have to wait until we can get it from Cairo. And it is very bad laying Track there now, as they are trying to. It is too hot weather for me to work much any where: and about twice as bad there as any where else. Besides it is necessarily sickly there.
