User-Contributed Transcription I M M Mr   L.H. 1847Brattleboro is quite a village, and appears to be a very thriving business place. On the other side of the Connecticut river, which river belongs entirely to New Hampshire, rises abruptly a high hill, this overtopping almost overhanging the Village so that the Sun usually rises at Brattleboro ' a little while before it sets at Capt. Jos. Stevens' in Warwick. Brattleboro is now the Terminus of quite a number of Stage routes, into several different States; and already the Centre of a good deal of business: which moreover will increase greatly when our Railroads are built, especially if the travel of the great West, or even a portion of it comes this way. By the way, our Engineering, (and who are better judges, or have better opportunities of judging?) think that about  the greatest chance for speculation, now in the Country, is at a place they call "Grouts" Grouts Tavern I suppose: which I believe is on or near the Conn. River, at or near the mouth of "Miller's River." It has, I believe, abundant Water priveleges, and other advantages "too numerous to mention." It will be on the proposed route just equidistant from Boston & Troy; the great half way house, Stopping to Dine place etc. besides a junction place of branches.
