Oct. 19. 1851Dear Mother & Sister LucyBrother Eliab & Samuel                              I do not know as I have really any thing to write, either new or important. It is very lately that I wrote to all o you, and told all I knew. However it is Sabbath Evening, only nine oclock, I am not yet sleepy; but here in my own quiet room, with convenient pen ink & paper silently inviting me to write. I had just returned from Methodist Meeting. It is the custom here to have one service at 11 A.M. and usually only one in the day. If another at all it is in the evening. The people do not sat "Meeting" or "Church" but "preaching" I have been to "preaching" twice today, Morning to the Baptist, Night to Methodist. These two are the only denominations here. There are I think no Presbyterians in Union Co. The Lutheran and German Reformed both are occasionally met with through this part of the state. This today is the first preaching of the New Methodist Minister. You know they change every year, and in this state it comes just now. In some respects I do like the Methodists, far better at any rate than the Baptists. Their peculiar organization is certainly an effective one.
