User-Contributed Transcription which answer a very good purpose, on snowy mornings, though they were mended in the most bungling manner possible I believe. a great junk of cowhide, I guess, boggled on over the old leather. The road here, you know, is always well trodden down constantly.  If Joseph could only find a market for his rare talent of writing exordiums for letters, he might soon make his fortune. Unfortunately it does not seem a very useful science. I guess he will have a pleasant school enough: it is probably a good deal harder than mine though, "His class in Algebra - to wit- Albert book  & Lucy, wont compare with Mine of 8, 6 girls & two boys. Also Grammar, Who was Luther MKeems teacher? Pass the wood, to give him a kick. My blackboard is just big enough for four only. A. Cook, got beyond Arithmetic! I should admire to get him into my first Class in Colburn.  do him good. Arithmetic or Algebra cant be worth much without that. It is the beauty if these city schools; they have been trained in & to it, & believe in it. Every scholar who studies arithmetic is Colburn; and that first, Class, who are really good in Algebra, (Understood Smith's thoroughly before) all go into it and it is worth a while, I wish you knew. I should like to train a class of 40 country schoolmasters about one winter in Colburn's first lessons; it would be worth $1600,00 to the State next winter. Joseph's watch, I guess, sleeps cold. Wrap it up in a flannel rag & put it under your pillow.  What a boyish school! Mine about 3/4 girls.  I guess I must send you Smyth's Algebra---It will be good for your a/o quantities!  Joseph can do those chores well enough if he dont have to chop the wood. I wish I had to do something. If I had not so very little time this evening, (twill soon be morning) I'd be glad to write J a separate letter!
