User-Contributed Transcription Bowd. College Aug. 13th, 1846Dear Mother, I have just received your letter of the 10th inst. and thank-you for it. It is a little strange that my last letter should put you into such a ferment. I wish I had kept a copy of the letter so as to see what I did write. I was not aware that the letter contained any more than I said while at home. You must have supposed that I meaned more than I said, instead of, as is usually the case with me, saying full as much as I mean. I have certainly not the slightest idea of leaving to go to another College: not though as you hint, because I could not! "Leonard's" certificate of my standing, week from next Tuesday, would admit me with all honor into the Senior Class of any College in the U.S., Yale or Harvard either. But, of course, I have no reason to leave, nothing to gain by leaving. I prefer a Diploma from Bowd. Coll. to one from any College in the U.S. except old Yale, and that I do not care much and to go there Senior would cost some $200, or 300, more, besides that I would not, on ant account, or for any consideration possible hardly. leave ' my own class and all my connections with old Bowdoin. As for my deciding not to perform at Commencement it is only this, you may decide whether I am right or not.
