User-Contributed Transcription I received a day or two since a letter from Joseph from his "quiet chamber, surrounded by books etc.", filled with grave speculations and 'well founded opinions' on various subjects, and then, crowded into the last line, these words. "It is the Erysipelas, you must keep it in a horizontal position & constantly bathed in spirit & water said Dr. McR. when I showed him my swelled legs. J.M. Metcalf", and no other word about himself, or Anne or Eliab. I infer that he is confined to his room, and am somewhat provoked at him for not writing something of it.I am very anxious to how both he and Eliab do. I went up to Turner about a week ago, started Friday night at 5 P.M. Got back at 12, Sat. night. A fellow student went with me, for whom I obtained one of the Turner schools, and who paid most of the expenses of the journey. I have agreed to go to Turner this fall, with the privelege, if I choose, of procuring a substitute, and leaving after the first six weeks. I shall go there the very first of September, six weeks be out before the middle of October. So that I can take the school here in Brunswick, or any other, 4 or 5 months long, thereafter. I may get the school here in Brunswick, but they will not here engage teachers so early. It would be no small advantage to be here in Brunswick through the winter, with the keys of the libraries at command, and, as I should have, all the periodicals, reviews, magazines, etc. of the Athenaean Soc. left in my charge.
