Lion is a Desolation.The present, declaration of religion, it's causes; finally bought in slavery, or connection of the American Church with it, as one cause; and spoke the rest of the afternoonupon it, or at least much longer than usual, and very good too pretty severe too, but I guess offended no one; people here different from a few years ago. Mr. Parker has had a great influence here, very great in that respect. He is a very different man from Mr. Wells.Fourth of July Bell ringing & powder smoking morning. As I swam an hour or so yesterday, worked considerable, and was employed late in the evening, I took a fine nap at the whole gun fire & bell ringing this morning.Alot of our best uns have gone down to Levant this morning, my roommate Chandler, Philbrick, the Charleston fellows, first rate chaps they are, etc. They had a flag made of their own 'Foxcroft Academy' 'Class of Protection'. The others got an best motto, 'Protection and no Flag? page torn I would not go under the 'Clay'.Got our ? page torn up yesterday. P.M I worked to get it up, considerable job, outside. They call it ? page torn bell in the place. pleasant tone.I have received another long letter from Clark, this weekI would to Joseph again but he left me in uncertain, whether to direct to Old town or fish River. If he wrote to you let me know.Mr Tash', 'Fourth' excites some speculation. (He went up to Capt. Holmes, where he is a frequent nightly visitor, one Wed eve. & was not seen in these parts again till Thurs eve, or Fri. morn. I staid here part of the day, I had a fine ride up to Guilford & about with Clement who was going up & offered me a ride with him.They had quite a parade here, but I did not care for it, or for H. Hamlins' speeches. Clay Celebration at Levant. J. W. Case, who went down from here, read the Declaration Paine Orator. Mr. Parker delivered an address up to Parkman.I intend to have sent this letter by (Dr Kimball Frid. but he went too soon.
