User-Contributed Transcription I came in this spring; and was very cordially received. Mr. Brown was not at home, but Mrs. Brown was very sociable, and I had long conversations with Frank, about every think, and talked about Eliab, and what he wanted to do with himself. Frank I guess is a pretty good sort of fellow, for a city chap; muchbetter than Ed, at any rate. Edwin is rather poor. Naturally quite smart, talented and good hearted; but has not studiedany quite rowdy; generally disliked here besides. Students give much of the blame of his College character to N. Hatch with whom he roomed hisfirst year, and who was much despised & befooled here. His capacity was small ignorance extensive, and self conceit all extending, besides being bad tempered;of course he was no favorite with students, you may imagine.I think very possible that his injudicious course may have had a bad influence from Brown, who was not very fond of his control.I guess Ed. behaves pretty decently now, though he attends the Tontine Ball & that a long & needless digression - I was going to say that I guess Eliab has got a very good situation indeed. Whether it is best for him or not is another thing. It a good family.I don't know much about Mrs Brown is an excellent woman, and Frank with whom he will have most to do is certainly a very smart business fellow, & well liked. What his influence otherwise may be I know not. I am some afraid for Eliab. He's placed under circumstances of more temptation than before, and he needs to set a double watch upon himself.I don't know as we ought to distrust his ability to meet temptation. He certainly ought be well fortified with good principles, though his natural stability of character may be less than Josephs or mine at his age.
