User-Contributed Transcription Miss Catherine E. Beecher?
To the Directors of the Ladies' Society for the Promotion of Education in the West.
I hear that a near relative of mine, Miss E. A. Rich of Bangor, Maine, is about going out West under the patronage of your Society. I think no private or merely selfish feelings ought to be suffered to interfere when fields of usefulness though they may be at the same time of sacrifice, are opening before our friends. Yet it seems a pity that any efforts or any powers of usefulness should be wasted or not employed to the best advantage.
Miss Rich is one ???fitted by ?? Abilities, Education, Experience, ??ement
and high toned morals & religious character for higher and more
extended ??  of action. Than are usually found in teaching?
common country schools among an ignorant and degraded ??
//lation, When such sacrifices are ne??ry for
be failry met. They are not with her. These are ??  fitted
with far  ??? sacrifices of feeling for perhaps equal usefulness in such
situation, whose degree of education and refinement renders them
incapable of some higher  ?? of action
I confess myself partly from my present situation,
