I was happy to see your P.I. as Maria's letter, though I cannot help regretting that you did not take another sheet, and make it as least as long as you intended!  I think you and I may fairly feel as old acquaintances and friends, even though our personal intercourse has been limited to an hour or two.   I am sure I feel as if well acquainted for three of four years ever since I spent two of the happiest
months of my migratory life, where I heard of, if I did not see you. I am far too much a lover of happiness to permit such "pleasant memories" as attach themselves in my mind to the Autumn of 1845, ever to fade.
I regret extremely the loss of that letter, the one that was "never heard of  [[more?]].  It made a sad break in my former correspondence.  I  could never forget those scenes and the friendships there formed; the cottage on the Hillside, and the long quiet happy evenings: I am afraid it would not do very well to have so pleasant a place within 1/2 doz Mls of Vt. & Mrs. [[?]]. R. Office.
  Maria writes that she is afraid of losing you this winter.  Why, I am rather late about this correspondence!  Besides my letter has been so long delayed it may never really  reach its exact direction!  The Royal Family, as we used to call it, certainly seem to be in demand.  I only wish the Rev Mr. Merrill of Brownfield was the Rev Mr. Merrill of Montague whose Church I attend.
{Policies subject of former con[[?]]ation, Foreign.  Astonishing Resolution of Mind in Central Europe Rome Italy.  Pres.t's of American & French Republics}
Maria is afraid of losing you. I tell her it is a gain rather than a loss. How does it seem to you? I thought Nancy & my sister Lucy felt somewhat as if it were a den of [[?]] of [[?]]ies. It seems to me that the forming new ties and associations to new places and companions need not really destroy or even weaken the old. The human soul as well as mind is designed not to suffer loss but to expand & widen & strengthen its sphere & its sympathies with every change and new experience.
