User-Contributed Transcription the ladies of town and those force themselves into company. Stevens may be called one of them but he does not succeed very well. He is rather soft in some of his actions: He went to Augusta and scraped an acquaintance with some of Rice's cousins without an invitation: he is going again on the Fourth. But I will not say any thing against Stevens, although he is not very popular in College, he has not had an election to either of the secret societies. I would never have joined the Atheneau Soc. if all had been like Stevens he is very overbearing. I roomed with him last term but do not now, and never shall again. He is very quick of temper. I think that he will try to get the school at Foxcroft, when he graduates: The Trustees do not know what he is. Almost every one thinks that he is a prime scholar down at Foxcroft. They (the Trustees) ought to know all about it for he will make the attempt and he would ruin the school. He will be at home in the fall and deliver lectures on Grammar. A fine lecturer he will make. He brags a great deal of his scholarship but I have seen him [[rawed?]] up several times by Rice and Kilby on points of Gram.
There is on thing of which I wish to speak you must not let him know that I spoke of it. He is practising deceit upon Miss Dennett which is too bad. For him to have one or two girls in town six or seven others somewher else and Miss Dennett in Milo and being on so serious terms with her as I know him to be, is not right. He cannot live without he has a dozen or sixteen girls here and there with whom he must correspond: He is trying to such her in in order that she may be his plaything when he is in Milo and Rice's cousins when he is in Augusta. I have nothing against Collins myself. We are on first rate terms but folks down here are very much mistaken about him and he will attempt to "come the game" over them yet. He feels nicely because Tash and Jerusha are likely to make a bargain. As I said Stevens be at home in September I suppose and Also Rice will study at Foxcroft this fall I expect. He will read Horace, I suppose, as we shall only read Excerpts this summer. You can easily make that up in the fall. I will send you book by Rice if you would like. We are reading Horace now (the Iliad) about 25 lines at a lesson: is is easy In the morning we read a page of Excerpt and have a lesson in Hedges Logick which is pretty hard. We shall finish the Algebra this term. We review regularly every week. We have exercises in Elocution three times a week For text book we use Comstocks System of Elocution
