Thursday. Brownville. Clear & Cold
Isaac & Walter Rider spent the night very pleasantly in a bough camp which they built in a spruce thicket about half a mile down Norway Point towards the S.S. corner of Skookum Lake. Very comfortable night. Had no breakfast until Mills Pt. arrived about 10 o clock. Lots of fishing in the early morning, as well as at night. the mighty grand old Katahdin looking down upon us in purest brilliantest majesty, apparently from the very head of the Lake, although it must be at least fifty miles away. The Trout bite is a light gradual pull, a swimming away with the bait, and probably requires a sudden sharp pull at one to fix the hook; at least we did not have very good success with a slow gradual pull. We carried only Pork for bait. The regular fishermen carry Chubs for bait, and sometimes use 'Cusk', a fish caught (like eels) in the lake, the head like a [[?] or Catfish without horns, and tail like an eel somewhat
We bough a trout & used for bait. but it is said that trouts do not bite well at that bait.
Our great success however was with a very different kind of bait, and we brough home 23 fish from 3/4 lb. to 6 lbs each, in all about 40 lbs.
Arrived at Mr Rider's about 3 P.M.; hungry &c.
Babies cross. Mother & Nellie writing letters to Anne.
Ned [[?]], Ed. L. C. Judson lectured at Brownville [[?]]
Mills R. went out to hear Mr G. Rider sermons
