July 7 1855
Saturday. Brownville. rainy some all day.
A sleep in AM. with Mayo.
Reading Nina by Miss [[?]].
Mr Rider went to village in P.M - took letter from Mallin to Eliab & Lucy - a bit enclosed from me to Isaac about paying my debts to Samuel. Brought home one from Lucy to me & to all the [[?]] - one from Anna to me - long one - telling how she & Isaac enjoyed their rambles & rides
St Paul, Minnesota Territory
Fair & warm
Arising early in the morning found our good Steamboat Galena lying quietly at the St Paul lower Levee.
Took Valise in hand & walked long, finally came to the Winslow House, supposed the best Hotel. It is most a Mile up the River from the Steamboat Landing. The Winslow is a pretty good House. Brick, four stories, cost $40,000.00 but I think is not very well kept. Price $2.00 per day.
The American price $1.50 seems at present to be more popular.
After Breakfast walked about all over Town. The business seems to be nearly all on one street nearly parallel with the river, towards the upper end built on both sides, but for a long way all open on the river bluff side
This bluff must be some 100 ft. high & affords fine view of the river &c. At the lower end, the bluff street is only taverns &c and the business is one St back. Back of the business the town is very sparsely built up, scattered over very musk ground.
The State House on a sort of Plateau a little higher than the rest of the Plain, a little back, is pretty large fine looking building, except too squat & not very well kept.
At Noon found Old Major Furber, who boards at the Snelling House his family being out of town. Walked round with him considerable to the house he is building on 7th St South, small but convenient.
