Jan. 11th. Tuesday. Very Cold
Morning very cold; said to be Far. -20
Down to Murdock &c before breakfast. Went down to river with Mr F & Orcutt but the ice was hardly strong enough to work upon.
P.M. Mr Field went out to survey Notch Mountain [[?]] wood lot. Office. Wood structure plan
Jan. 12th. Wednesday. Cold Pleasant
Notch Mountain survey. Went with Mr. Purple of Gill, Orcutt & found Henry Johnson out hauling rails. Timber lot called Notch Mountain. Men, holding by deeds & morgages, parts of the lot from the heirs of Le[[?]] Mattoon, surveyors agree not by 40 or 50 acres. An abominable bad place. Steep mountain ledge sides, in thick wood North & South sides. East, the Warwick line. Mr Field went over yesterday.
Eve. Rec. by [[?]]adelford, from Brattleboro Post Office advertised, a letter from J.K. Metcalf S. Royalston. Sent two letters. One to Bangor E.W.M. EAR Enc. One to Milo to Lucy, & to Mother, Almeda & Charles. (Smith, White, Blake & [[?]] to Montague)
When I went in found Mr Smith apparently somewhat excited but he soon fell asleep in his chair. &c. I am sorry, very sorry.
