Certain consequences infallibly result from certain causes; - in the physical world, in the intellectual world, and in the moral world: enforced with a variety of illustrations &c. and same subject continued P.M.
Smith had quite a scrape last night: he went to rum shanty up here, to get away form their Mason. Charlie Short, who got on a spree, wasting his money the shanty so full of drunken Irishmen; Smith [[?]]ed Short, and pulled him out; the Irishmen pitched upon him. He floored three on four, but would probably have had a hard chance with so many; if Nichols & some of his men from the Quarry had not come up at the moment on the same errand.
Letter to Joseph &c.

Dec. 27th Monday   Cold. Clear
Office all day. Deed plans &c. Mr. Field went to Brattleboro.

Dec. 28th Tuesday  Snow  cool.    cloudy
Snowy morning. A.M. With Fisher set slopes stakes for an extra track from Meadow Road to River. pretty cool.
P.M. Office. Deed plans &c. Leonard up.
Eve. Mr. Field returned, Brought my coat, not books.
