User-Contributed Transcription the chilly winds we have occasionally, remind us that Autumn is here. We have had rain, frequent and abundant, so that, since the grain was gathered, "the sear, the yellow leaf" is hardly visible anywhere about us, at present. If you have showers as often as we, those instruments must, ere this, have become quite thoroughly acquainted with your coats. Mother thinks she shall suggest an India Rubber covering, made on purpose, to take the place of the garments. I have no school to occupy my thoughts now. It seemed rather strange at first, as usual, but I did not mind it as much as I generally do, because I have had so much else to take my attention. The school agent, in the District, wished to know whether if they would allow me three or four weeks in which to rest, I would return for a private school. Since that, another school has been proffered, of a similar character. The visiting Committee and a number of the people of the District were present, the last afternoon of my school. You will recollect I had but 12 scholars, but notwithstanding the small number, the exercises were not completed until five minutes past five o'clock. I intended to have been through before four, but the Committee had very many questions to ask, which, of course, detained us. But the examination never passed with more comfort and pleasure to me. I shall always love those scholars - they have been so good & studious. It required very little effort, on my part, to govern my school. We are just enjoying some very fine early apples which our own farm produced. I wish you could share them with us - could I send some in a letter, they should be forthcoming. Father says "you can, but it would be a very awkward letter." We are all very glad to hear that you still hope
