User-Contributed Transcription James is with Charles yet he had not been home since March till I went there. He has the reputation of being a very good steady young man. He has made up his mind to be a Farmer is intending to work out & get money enough as soon as he can & go out west & buy him a farm & have a home for his Mother if she should wish it - Mr. Rider is much more comfortable than I expected to see him - he says he does not suffer much pain not so much as he did months ago - tho' his cancer is fast progressing it has affected the bone so that about the middle of the jaw on the left side it is seperated & his chin fallen back 3/4 of an inch it troubled him to talk at first but he talks well enough now it has also ate clean through to his mouth just before his ear. Almeda has to dress it 3 times a day the smell is very offensive - She sleeps in the little middle bedroom - I enjoy'd my visit there better far than I expected he was very sociable & they both seem'd happy & contended. Lizzie went home last Monday. I concluded that Maria had rather not have her here this winter Almeda would rather she should be away from home if she could be at a good school she
