User-Contributed Transcription Walter wants you should come home before staying as--(tho he is a smart hand to mow they say if he is not his side is lame & he can't pitch hay or mow much I suppose-- I suppose you are earning more wages than the hire of a good smart man would be here (if one could be obtain'd)--perhaps it could be done or let out the hay but you know the Barn needs fixing and it will not secure the hay--& no one can do your work to just as good advantage as you can yourself--Mo' Walter seems interested & careful about everything as if it was his own & gets along nicely & if he can't do too much in a day it seems so he can better than the hir'd men we have usually had [seems more like one of our folks]I feel afraid Isaac will work too hard do warn him & charge him to be careful of his health he looks very different from what he us'd to --- and do be careful of yourself and come away before you get the "shakes"It is very very hard for Charlie to learn to read I get quite discourag'd sometimes & he does quit he has not tried much this 3 or 4 weeks past [we haven't tried to have him read at all] he had rather do any thing rather than look in a book--I went out in the back room last night & he was sitting alone on the floor by the stove looking very sad I told him he'd better go to bed-- he said he did not want to grow any bigger I asked him why? He answered because he did not learn he did not want to grow bigger he could learn but he is going to school next week perhaps he'll take a new start then I shall direct this to Isaac as perhaps it might not get there till you have started for home If you do come home to do your Staying you'll get here before Anna comesJune 10th
