User-Contributed Transcription Dear Children I was very glad indeed of your good letter & rejoice to hear that there is a greater attention to religion. If it is of God may you all share in it & may it be lasting as eternity & not like the morning Cloud and the early Dew. I wish I could step in and sit & chat with you evenings I want to see Josie & Mary I expect he will be such a great smart boy I shall hardly know him I suppose he can fetch in all the wood & chips that Charlie & he chop Isaac has telegraph'd twice to the boys from Chicago & N York. But he has not written to tell us when he is coming however we are all expecting him & Nettie & Mayo next week shall have a letter I guess soon I went down to Eliab's yesterday had not been there since thanksgiving day Maria is not very well had a very bad cold & head ache they had a great social gathering it the vestry all the people invited who attend the Central Church Maria took a very bad cold perhaps by wearing thin shoes I am glad to hear that Charlie learns to read & I am rather glad that he does not go to school Lucy says she would not send a child to school to Wm. L. at any rate. Lucy conclude & so did I that Charlie as been talk'd to coax'd warn'd and teas'd enough that he must get started by[left-hand side and top] Isaac has help'd the boys out of a great straight with some of his money. Eliab is a smart financier I suppose. A man said he beat all that if he a cent in the world and ow'd 100000 dollars he would pay it all up at the time it became due
