User-Contributed Transcription know that he can learn many other things he does learn easy enough so that he can get book knowledge - "If the tool is dull put to the more strength"If you will recollect a conversation I had with you about 7 years ago on neglecting to cultivate the intellect and allowing the whole soul & mind to be absorb'd in the things of time & sense the mere animal you may see a reason why Charles has no love for a Book & let it induce you both to put forth great & unwearied effort to counteract the tendency to, all animal & no Soul remembering that whatever good you accomplish with the eldest is more than half accomplish'd with the younger ones for the copy will be follow'd whether good or badI punish'd Charlie once while here with a rod for improper immodest behavior - I wish he could be induc'd to tell exactly about it - but tis better for him that he should not know that I mentioned it - He has fine & tender feelings - has the stuff in him as Lucy says to make a noble & excellent man if rightly train'dIt seems to me that if I were you I would make the training the minds of the Children the all important work whatever else is neglected that should not be their - manners too should be daily & hourly attended toI have a keener sense of it from seeing so much that appears uncouth & really impudent in Charlie without his being conscious that it was in any way improper - I am aware that there are many obstacles to overcome but they can & must be surmountedA.M.M.
