User-Contributed Transcription Milo October 23rd 1846My Dear Son"Good boy, well done." Thank you for the two nice beautiful pens you sent which I recied last night in the letter that we had been looking for with some anxiety for you had been silent longer than usual - you ask why I do not write more tis certainly not because your letters are not directed to me for a good share of them are. Tis not because I don't think of you a great deal for I do and sometimes feel very anxious about you. I think of a "great lot" that I want to say to you, but then I consider that Lucy is the ready writer especially of news - & that the small amount of sapient counsel I am capable of giving has got to be an old story I really suppose you have arriv to such a point of knowledge that you know almost as much as your marm.Seriously tho' - I feel old age come creeping on, you are become the strong man & I the child tis for you to give counsel advise & instructions - I am growing weak in body and mind - not that the mind is really weakened perhaps, but cramp'd , encumbered, fetter'd by infirmities of body, lack of suitable food for the mind and a redundancy of low and groveling abjects necessarily connected with a life of toil & petty cares, - But tho' I can do nothing else for you, I can pray for you & O how thankful I am that my children are all such good children all so well situated so blessed of God and prosper. I rejoice but I rejoice with trembling especially for Joseph for he talks of going into business for himself in Co. with a Mr Folsom. Joseph understands himself pretty well but I fear he is taking a wrong step, tho' I know nothing of the circumstances of the case except that he is too young.
