Summary Memorandum, dated July 29, 1683 and signed by the Marquis de Seignelay concerning additional troops and arms for defense against the Iroquois in Canada. In his memo, Seignelay (who succeeded his father, Jean Baptiste Colbert, as secretary of state for the navy under Louis XIV) notifies naval officials that the king has been made aware of the demand from the French colonies in Canada for increased military forces to combat the Iroquois.  Seignelay specifically requests that 200 new naval officers be enlisted, and that 1000 muskets and service pistols, of a different length and caliber from those currently in use, be taken from the warehouses in Rochefort. Hopefully, the ship anchored at present in the harbor in La Rochelle will be large enough to transport the men and arms to Canada as soon as possible.  Furthermore, Seignelay orders the naval treasury to transfer 6000 livres to Rochefort, and an additional 20,000 livres to finance the new defenses.  If 200 officers are not available for service, 150 will have to suffice, but they must be ready to depart within 8 days.
