Dear Jack and Gladys,
I suppose you may have wondered
what happened to us. It's been a long time since
I've written to you, and I'm pretty sure that I'm
the one who owes you a letter, too.
First of all, please note the new address.
We moved here about seven months ago, to a 10th
floor apartment, quite a bit smaller than our last
one. We really don't like elevator buildings very much, but here we are.
Well, last night George McGovern won the
nomination for the presidency. We have been for him
for quite a long time, mainly, of course, because of
his stand on Southeast Asia. You will recall
that four years ago i did some work, mostly talking
to my friends and writing a few letters to politicians,
in support of Eugene McCarthy. I'm sure you are
still as anti-war as ever and, therefore, also a
supporter of McGovern.
I suppose Anne and I should be giving a
victory party. If you two were in town we surely
would give one.
Curiously, I don't feel exultant, though. I feel
kind of sorry for McGovern, knowing what he will
have to go through in the next four months. Like
many other people, I am very much opposed to
Nixon and his crew, but I believe that the chances
are about 90% that he will be reelected. I even
feel sorry for Dick Daley, feudal political boss
