Dear Jack and Gladys,
We didn't send any cards this year-
not even to my old father in Maryland or my
old aunt in California. We bought some
cards but did not send them out. Anne was too
busy nursing me and I was too weak to do
it. Bender[?], I guess our hearts are not in it
since we have had the worst year, I guess, of our
lives.
I do have a little more strength now and
a little more life, and so I am writing you a
short letter. First of all, thank you for your card.
Then, Anne and I, very belatedly, wish to
offer our deepest sympathy for the loss of your
beloved daughter, Margaret Jean. We know how
terrible that must have made you both feel. 1976
was an awful year for you, too. We had heard about
it some months ago, but I have been with my
own severe troubles since August.
In August, I entered the hospital (Presbyterian-
St. Likes), [?] that I would have to have another
stomach operation. (As you may know, I have
