that he is. He so enjoyed being a power-broker
and having everyone come to him, hat in hand, before
or during a convention. This time Jerry Ruben[?] was
inside the convention hall and Daley was refused
admittance. A very ironic turn of events.
Later today we will learn who the
vice-president candidate will be. I prefer
the U.A.W. leader, Woodcock, of those whose
names have been mentioned as possibilities.
I've had plenty of time to watch all the
proceedings on T.V., since I'm not working
during the summer. (I work very hard, with
very little free time of any sort, for 9 1/2 or 10
months a year. Then, in the summer, I loaf,
and try to do some reading.) So Anne and I
listened to the whole thing- the fight for the
seating of the delegates, the fight over the platform,
George Wallace's speech from his wheelchair, & the
nominating speeches last night. That is, we listened
to almost the whole thing. We didn't stay up to 5
or 6 o'clock AM, though, on Monday night or Tuesday
night. We went to bed about midnight on those
nights. But we did see and hear more of the
proceedings than most people.
I wonder what H. L. Mencken would have
written about this convention, if he were still alive.
The wonderful nonsense of political conventions
was something he enjoyed so much.
