Board of Deacons in his church.
He had 6 children and a wife, he
was desparate, he came to
Lewis' apartment fell in the
floor in a crying rage or
despair. When he sobered up
emotionally enough to tell
his story to Lewis and explain
his financial plight, Lewis
wrote him a check for
$6,000.00 on the spot.
I also heard Lewis speak
the second time in the Unitarian
Church. It was the time; he gave
his reasons against accepting
the Pulitzer Prize and rejected
it. This was not showmanship
as many charged. Lewis was an
honest writer and man. He believed
in what he was doing by rejecting
the Prize.
Birkhead said and related
many things about Lewis to me, while
they were in Minnesota that
