Dear Jack:
I send on a memento. It's most valuable for the chubby portrait of some imposter who claims to be me.
I'll be sixty four years to Heaven in No-vember. As of mid-August I'll be free from administrative chores here (+ with a leave of absence until January 1987), so I'll have a fairly extensive period in which to read + write + gamble, as well as to continue with my commit-ment to root-canal work, followed by caps, for all of my teeth. All this forthcoming freedom, with all the attendant options, has left me in a kind of paralysis. The only thing I've done recently to cope with this is to apply for a teaching Fulbright to New Zealand for six months in '86. Why there? I think it's because the natives speak English, but it may be because there are 75 million sheep + only three million people in residence. In any case I have no idea whether I'll really force my poor wife to go to N.Z. (the truth is, she likes the idea better than I) if by some miracle I were invited there. What would Conroy do?
One of my friends here, the Dean of the Law School, Dan Hopson, died a short while ago. The two of us had decided a couple of years ago, for much the same reasons (none of them to do with health), that we wanted to give up administrative chores for other joys. But he died. Now, some of the faculty
