Dear Jack — My wife and I are indebted to the Wixsons for sending us an invitation to your birthday party. Believe me if my old bones, gone rusty after 87 years of wear, could take the haunt, I'd love to give you an old-fashioned abrazo. But I dare say, what with all those friends to greet you, you wont miss me.
Practically none of my old friends miss me. The only one who telephones me from time to time is Albert Maltz. He is like Old Faithful in Yellowstone.
Do you recall that seminar on the Thirties at the U. of Conn. which our dear friend, Mickey Stern, arranged for my account? One of the pleasures I had on that occasion was to snub Caldwell who had behaved like a louse when I asked him to contribute to an anthology I was preparing during my stay in Mexico. But the world contains many Caldwells — for instance a John Cheever for whom I worked as hard as for any of my clients (he who married my secretary). On the other hand there was Langston Hughes who inscribed all of his books to me; or Nathanael West dedicated his Miss Lonely Hearts to Max.
Our best wishes to you for Auld Lang Syne.
Maxim
