Summary Four letters, 1797-1824, from John Sergeant to clergyman, geographer, and Indian advocate, Jedediah Morse, regarding Sergeant's mission to the Stockbridge Indians and their resettlement in the West. Sergeant writes to Morse, who was on the board of the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge and who in 1820 completed a War Dept.-sponsored tour of the Indian country, both as an employer and as one who could influence U.S. policy toward the Stockbridge Indians. Sergeant requests an additional stipend for himself, comments on Samuel Kirkland (Society missionary to the Oneidas), and urges the Society to assign missionaries to the Stockbridge Indians at White River and Green Bay. Hoping to ensure a successful relocation of the tribe to Wisconsin, Sergeant also lobbies for adequate payment for White River lands, and for the establishment of land titles, regulation of traders, and exclusion of white settlers at Green Bay.

Biographical/Historical Note Missionary to the Stockbridge Indians. Supported by the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge, Sergeant in 1775 began his ministry at the Stockbridge, Mass., mission founded by his father (John Sergeant, 1710-1749). When the Stockbridge Indians relocated among the Oneidas at New Stockbridge, N.Y., Sergeant continued his work there. He later attempted to assist the tribe in their aborted 1818 move to the White River in Ohio and in their removal to the Fox River near Green Bay, Wisc., beginning in 1822.
