Summary Letters from John Jacob Astor regarding American Fur Company business to Samuel Abbott, Michilimackinac agent of the firm (1822); and to Pratte, Chouteau and Company of St. Louis and Pierre Chouteau (1834). The Dec. 23, 1822, letter to Abbott, then in St. Louis, advises on the prices and desirability of various skins and on shipping them from New Orleans.  The Aug. 30, 1834, letter to Pratte, Chouteau and Company also includes a separate letter of the same date to Pierre Chouteau and a copy of a previous letter (Aug. 23) to him. This correspondence discusses payments from the American Fur Company office and requests information regarding business prospects. 
Biographical/Historical Note Fur trade entrepreneur, founder of the American Fur Company. Astor established the Western Department of the American Fur Company in St. Louis in 1822.  In 1834, Pratte, Chouteau and Company (in which Pierre Chouteau was a partner) purchased the Western Department from Astor, who was leaving the business.
