Summary
Two letters from James Abbott in Detroit, to Ramsay Crooks, general manager of the American Fur Company, then in St. Louis (June 13, 1822), and to O.N. Bostwick, an American Fur Company agent in St. Louis (Aug. 31, 1824), concerning the fur trade in Detroit and financial transactions via Bostwick with Crooks. Abbott outlines his plans for obtaining entire lots of furs and his dealings with traders (Col. Anderson of the River Raisin and Mr. Forsyth of Fort Wayne). He also reports on the activities of Mr. Stone, a Detroit competitor.
Biographical/Historical Note
Detroit postmaster, justice of the peace, and fur trader connected with the American Fur Company and Pierre Chouteau Jr. & Co. of St. Louis. Brother of Samuel Abbott of Michilimackinac.
