Summary
Three letters, Sept. 28, 1755 (Oswego), Nov. 13, 1755 (Albany), and May 31, 1756 (Albany), to Sir William Johnson, British superintendent of the northern Indian dept. and military commander of the Crown Point expedition. The letters concern troops, artillery, and supplies for Crown Point, the strength and location of French forces, and the safety and reinforcement of Fort Hunter. Shirley encloses an extract from a July 16, 1755, letter from Nova Scotia lieutenant governor Charles Lawrence to Edward Braddock, to assure Johnson that no more than 700 of the newly arrived French troops could be in the Crown Point region. He also discusses the reliability of Robert Rogers' estimates of French troop strength and the proper accounting of payments to the Indians for returning deserters.
Biographical/Historical Note
Colonial governor of Massachusetts and military commander. Following the death of Edward Braddock in July, 1755, Shirley was appointed commander-in-chief of British North American forces. He was recalled to England in 1756, and was succeeded in command by Lord Loudoun.
