Summary June 2, 1835, letter written for Keokuk aboard the steamboat "Warrior" and signed with his mark, to Pierre Chouteau, St. Louis fur trader and financier, containing instructions regarding the delivery of a tent ordered by Keokuk in St. Louis. Keokuk wished the tent sent to the "trading house of Mr. Smith at the foot of the lower rapids." 
Biographical/Historical Note Non-hereditary chief of the Sauk and Fox Indians who urged his people not to resist white advances. After the Black Hawk War in 1832, the U.S. appointed Keokuk chief of the Sauks and Foxes, gave him responsibility for administering a $20,000 annuity, and awarded his supporters 400 square miles of territory on the Iowa River in Iowa.
