Summary Letter and enclosed receipts for merchandise sold by the American Fur Company to Vance Murray Campbell, dated in Portage des Sioux, on the Mississippi in Missouri, and in St. Louis, between Aug. 22 and Sept. 20, 1826. In his letter, dated Sept. 20, 1826 in Portage, to Mr. O.N. Bostwick of the American Fur Company in St. Louis, Benito Vasquez states that he is enclosing two receipts from Vance Campbell, as well as 5 packets of deerskins which Bostwick will find in the barge. Vasquez has met two trappers who need supplies, one of whom has 5 packets of beaver skins to trade, and he is sending them on to Bostwick. One of the two enclosed receipts, dated Aug. 22, 1826 in St. Louis, shows that $500 worth of merchandise was purchased from the American Fur Company by the United States Indian Department, "for Iowa annuities." A second receipt, dated Sept. 15, 1826, documents the articles purchased by Vance Campbell from Benito Vasquez, including tarps, tent, rifle, hammer, and 10 gallons of whiskey ("plus ou moins"); Campbell also paid the amount of the Iowa invoice described above.
