Summary
Nov. 22, 1890, letter from John M. Sweeney, teacher at the No. 8 Day School on the middle branch of Medicine Creek at what was known as Little Wound's Camp, to Royer, regarding the practice of the Ghost Dance in the Medicine Root district. Also list of Pine Ridge Ghost Dance participants arranged by location and band, prepared by Indian police captain George Sword. In his letter, Sweeney paraphrases a statement by Little Wound protesting the presence of U.S. troops on the reservation, vowing to continue the religious dance until Spring, affirming his own position as chief, and discounting the threat to stop rations and annuities. In Sweeney's view, Little Wound and other believers, who consistently resisted government policies and programs (including the Sioux Bill resulting from the 1889 Sioux Commission charged with reducing reservation lands) would continue the dance until stopped by force and would fight if it became necessary.
