Summary
February 14, 1755, letter from St. Clair to Robert Hunter Morris, governor of Pennsylvania, regarding preparations for Braddock's Pennsylvania expedition. St. Clair requests maps of the province, reports that the British troops are expected to arrive any day and notes that they will need to be assisted by one of the regiments raised in the "northern provinces," and directs Morris to locate a direct route to the French forts. The quartermaster also requests that Morris assist his commissary in procuring supplies and wagons, and warns of diversionary raids by the French Canadians and their Indian allies.
Biographical/Historical Note
Lieutenant colonel on Gen. Edward Braddock's staff and deputy quartermaster general of British forces in North America. Appointed quartermaster in Nov., 1754, St. Clair was wounded in the 1755 ambush in which Braddock was killed. He never recovered and was replaced as quartermaster in 1758.
