Summary
April 30, 1853, letter from Secretary of War Davis, written soon after his assumption of office, to Secretary of the Interior Robert McClelland, requesting a meeting regarding Texas Indian policy. Davis was conferring with army generals David E. Twiggs (commander of the Western Division) and Persifor Smith (commander of Military Dept. No. 8) about Texas, and wanted McClelland to join the discussion.
Biographical/Historical Note
President of the Confederate States of America. Before the Civil War, Jefferson Davis served as a U.S. representative and senator from Mississippi, and as secretary of war in the cabinet of Franklin Pierce, 1853-1857.
