Summary Contemporary copy of a Mar. 22, 1816, letter from the Cherokee delegation in Washington, to George Graham, acting secretary of war, requesting that unauthorized persons be removed by military force from their reserved lands, so that the lessee, Gideon Morgan, could take possession. In addition to obtaining the removal of intruders during their 1816 visit to Washington, the Creek delegates sought Creek War-related pensions and damage payments. Delegates included John Lowrey, John Walker, Major Ridge, Richard Taylor, Cheucunsenee, and John Ross.  All but the last placed their marks on this request.
Biographical/Historical Note On October 25, 1805, at Tellico, the Cherokees ceded lands in Tennessee and Kentucky to the federal government, but reserved specified tracts for the use of the Nation. The reserved tracts included one opposite South West Point, one at the foot of Cumberland Mountain, and one on the north bank of the Tennessee River.
