Summary
Letter written by Laurent S. Juneau on July 30, 1856 to Louis B. Porlier, a member of the Green Bay, Wis. fur trading family. In this letter Juneau asks Porlier to secure the services of the son of Augustin Grignon, another fur trader, to build "a shanty on the pay ground" similar to one built three years ago. Presumably, the structure was needed to settle payment accounts with Indians in northern Wisconsin.
Biographical/Historical Note
Laurent Solomon Juneau, fur trader and founder of the city of Milwaukee, was born in 1793 in Montreal. In 1821 he settled in Milwaukee where he engaged in the fur trade. Juneau also became first postmaster and mayor of Milwaukee. He later died in poverty and debt while attending meeting to settle Indian payments in 1856.
