Summary Letter written by Presley Nevill on Aug. 3, 1792 to Thomas Mifflin, Governor of Pennsylvania. As lieutenant of the Allegheny County militia, Neville reports to Gov. Mifflin on Indian affairs in the Northwest Territory. The letter includes some information on hostile Indian tribes, the defeat of General St. Clair's army, and the alliance of the Seneca Indians to the United States. Nevill also reports that "the Commissions of the Militia officers of this County have not been renewed."

Biographical/Historical Note Presley Nevill, soldier and merchant, was born in Pittsburgh in 1756. Neville fought in the Revolutionary War and returned to Pittsburgh following the war. Between 1792 and 1818 he was a merchant in Pittsburgh and was also involved in the Allegheny County militia. Neville died in Fairview, Ohio in 1818.
