Summary
June 30, 1779, letter from James Duane in Philadelphia to George Clinton, governor of New York, regarding the lack of attention to Indian affairs in that state. Duane notes that the legislature has not appointed state commissioners, agents, or interpreters, and relies on the services of James Dean, agent for the Indian commissioners (three of whom are New Yorkers) appointed by the Continental Congress. Dean urges Clinton to appoint permanent resident agents to watch over the Indians' conduct, facilitate land office and trade matters, and secure "the safety and tranquility of our frontiers."
Biographical/Historical Note
New York City lawyer and delegate to the first and second Continental Congresses, 1774-1783, where he focused on financial and Indian affairs. Duane was later mayor of New York, 1784-1789, and the first federal judge of the district of New York, 1789-1794.
