Summary
Feb. 11, 1914, letter from Dixon to Edward E. Ayer, then a member of the Board of Indian Commissioners, requesting a meeting to discuss the "present condition and future destiny" of the American Indian. Dixon also notes that if Ayer would meet him in Philadelphia, he would show him the photographs accompanying his lecture, "The Farewell of the Chiefs."
Biographical/Historical Note
Photographer of North American Indians. From 1908-1917, Joseph Kossuth Dixon led three expeditions sponsored by Rodman Wanamaker to American Indian reservations in the west. The purpose of these expeditions was to document Indian culture through photography, and in so doing to promote the campaign to make them citizens.
