Summary March 2, 1760, letter from Appy to Thomas Hancock, a Boston merchant and supplier to British troops in Nova Scotia, responding to Hancock's invitations and proffered gifts, and reporting that preparations were being made to send Col. Archibald Montgomery with 1,300 soldiers to South Carolina to punish the Cherokees for treaty violations. Beginning in April, 1760, Montgomery led a force of Highlanders, Royal Scotts, and South Carolinians against the Lower Towns, but abandoned his march to relieve Fort Loudoun in Tennessee.  As a result, that garrison was forced to surrender. 
Biographical/Historical Note Judge advocate and secretary to Lord Loudoun and Sir Jeffery Amherst, commanders of the British forces in North America during the French and Indian War.
