Summary
April 23, 1756, letter from Cadwallader Colden to his regular correspondent, Peter Collinson, a prominent London merchant and natural scientist, regarding Indian attacks and colonial defense during the initial stages of the French and Indian War, the death of a close friend, James Alexander, and revisions to his Principles of action in matter (published 1751). Colden discusses his Indian-provoked exile from his Orange County, N.Y., home; compares the defensive policies of Pennsylvania and New York and questions the unspecified conduct of Benjamin Franklin in regard to the former; explores the reasons for the lack of martial spirit in the colonies; and emphasizes the necessity of Great Britain's active intervention.
