Summary
March 19, 1761, letter to Sir William Johnson, British superintendent of the northern Indians, regarding rumors of Gen. Amherst's departure for England, the disruption of the French fur trade, the loyalty of the "Caghnawageys & Caneghsadegey," the return of English prisoners held by the "Nipisins" and that tribe's fear of British reprisals, the revision and reprinting of a Mohawk prayer-book with added catechisms, and Claus' plan to purchase a military captaincy with Johnson's financial assistance.
Biographical/Historical Note
British Indian department official. Born in Germany, Daniel Claus emigrated to Philadelphia in 1749, met Conrad Weiser and tutored his son, and lived among the Mohawks. In 1755 Claus was made a lieutenant in the Indian dept. under Sir William Johnson and in 1760 was appointed deputy agent to the Canadian Indians. Based in Montreal, Claus reported both to Johnson and military officials, and served until 1775.
