Summary
October 15, 1749, letter from La Corne to John Hawks of Deerfield, Mass., who had been commander at Fort Massachusetts when the garrison was captured and burned in 1746 and who had journeyed to Canada in 1748 to redeem English captives, regarding La Corne's inability to locate a prisoner (probably a captive of the Indians) after whom Hawks had enquired. There is also a draft of an Apr. 10, 1752, letter, written in Deerfield, presumably by Hawks to La Corne, wondering if La Corne had heard anything more about the prisoner and thanking him for all his kindnesses.
Biographical/Historical Note
French Canadian military officer, merchant, fur trader, interpreter, and Legislative Council member. Fluent in several Indian languages, La Corne recruited and led warriors from allied Indian tribes during King George's War, the French and Indian War, and the American Revolution.
