Summary
Letter written by Coram and dated June 17, 1745 addressed to the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians in New England. In this letter Coram records his earlier encounters with the New England missionaries hired by the Society and questions their employment practices. According to Coram, "some favourite Ministers in New England had great allowances for doing nothing to any good intent or purpose, particularly the then Minister of Taunton...." He suggests that the Society employ only missionaries who will reside with the Indians and provide continual religious and educational instruction.
Biographical/Historical Note
Thomas Coram, philanthropist and shipwright, was born in 1668 in Dorsetshire, England. In 1694 he settled in Taunton, Mass. to promote shipbuilding and remained in the vicinity for the next ten years. Following his return to England, he became known for his public spirit and charity work in England and the colonies. In later years, Coram neglected his own private affairs and died a poor man in 1751.
