John Armstrong, soldier and explorer, first served in the Pennsylvania regiments during the Revolutionary War and thereafter he was engaged in the protection and exploration of the Ohio frontier. During this period, Armstrong served in St. Clair's Campaign (1791) and as commandant of Fort Hamilton which was established as a line of defense against hostile Indian tribes near present-day Cincinnati.
