Summary November 12, 1774, letter from Dean to Stephen Williams (Longmeadow, Mass., clergyman who had been taken captive along with his parents and siblings in 1703/04 and who was active in Indian missionary work), regarding his summer among the Canadian Indians at Caghnawaga and neighboring towns. Dean relays news of William's sister, Eunice, who had not been ransomed and remained among the Indians in Canada, reports on the prospects for Protestant missionary work in the region, and discloses that he had returned to Dartmouth with four Indian boys from St. Francois who were descended from an American captive named Gill.

Biographical/Historical Note Groton, Conn., native who as a child lived for five years among the Oneidas and who attended Dartmouth as a charity student, graduating in 1773. Under the auspices of Eleazer Wheelock of Dartmouth, James Dean, Levi Frisbie, and another charity student spent the summer of 1774 among the Canadian Indians. Dean's oratorical abilities and his familiarity with the languages and customs of the Iroquois gave him great influence among them; during the Revolution he was instrumental in persuading the Oneidas to support the colonies.
