Letter written by James McFarlane on Dec. 10, 1808 to John B. Treat regarding his recent apppointment as Special Indian Agent. In this letter McFarlane includes a transcribed copy of his original instructions from Meriwether Lewis dated Oct. 9, 1808.
Biographical/Historical Note
James McFarlane, army officer, was appointed in the fall of 1808 as special agent in the Indian Department for the Districts of New Madrid and Arkansas by Meriwether Lewis, Governor of the Missouri Territory.
